what about insurance coverage?
Some health insurance providers cover "Nutritional Counselling" under extended health benefits! The Canadian Association of Natural Nutrition Practitioners (CANNP) has been working diligently to get Canadian health insurance providers on board with this much needed benefit for their clients.
Alberta Blue Cross, Manulife, iA Financial Group, GreenShield Canada, Equitable Life Insurance, ClaimSecure Inc. will cover our services when policies specifically include nutritional counselling (also called nutrition consulting on some plans). With AB Blue Cross we can offer direct billing as well.
Tammy Mc Donald, CNP, CPT, NNCP is registered with CANNP and can provide official receipts for submitting to your insurance, and direct billing through both Alberta Blue Cross and Provider Connect (for GreenShield Canada).
What can you do to help?
- Check with your health provider to see if you have "nutrition counselling" coverage. If they don't (yet) then request they add it to their plan.
- Download and customize this sample letter plus this infographic for sending to your employer and/or human resources department.
- Talk to your coworkers, have others join you in requesting coverage. The more an employer or benefit provider is aware of the need for it, the more inclined they will be to include it as an option!
